Strange as it seems, the story of ceylon tea begins with coffe, coffe was dominated crop on the island; however, it was destined for failure, it was in 1824 that the first tea plant was brought from china by the british and planted in royal btanical gardens in peraddeniya, kandy. It is considered to be the first non- commercial tea crop to be grown in the country.
James Tayloe was a british citizen who introduced tea plantation to ceyton, James Taylor arrived in ceylon in 1852, settling down at the looecondera estate, galah. He begins a 19-acre tea plantation on the loolecondera estate in 1987, laying the foundation for what would become sri lanka’s largest export industory for over a century.

As the oldest and largest tea auction centre in the world in 1894. In 1894 the ceylon tea traders association was formed and today virtually all tea produced in sri lanka is conducted through this association and ceylon chamber of commerce.
